Palermo Coach Hire for Groups
Palermo's old town is a ZTL, and a coach needs a pass linked to its number plate to drive there. Sort the pass, check the hours for the date, and agree set-down points on the main roads.
The ZTL Centrale pass
The central limited-traffic zone covers much of the old town. Tourist coaches and other M2 and M3 buses need a pass (contrassegno) tied to the vehicle; it is sold through the municipal mobility portal and app. Daily, monthly, half-year and yearly passes exist.
The hours matter. They follow the municipal technical rules issued in May 2024: Monday to Thursday 08:00–20:00, on Friday from 08:00 into the night, on Saturday only at night and on Sunday from midnight to 06:00. The Friday and Saturday night hours change with the season, so check them for the travel date.

Setting down near the sights
The old town streets are narrow and the markets of Ballarò and the Vucciria are pedestrian. Set-down points therefore go on the wider streets circling the old town, near the Teatro Massimo or by the Cathedral for instance; the operator fixes them ahead of the visit.
Palermo Centrale lies where Via Roma ends to the south, and the cruise and ferry port is beside the centre. Both work as meeting points for a group arriving by sea or by rail.

Coach rules in Palermo that shape the day
- Palermo Airport (PMO, Falcone Borsellino, at Punta Raisi) is about 31 km by road from the Quattro Canti (about 45 min by coach in light traffic).
- Palermo Centrale station is at the southern end of Via Roma, at the edge of the old town. The cruise and ferry port is next to the city centre.
- Palermo has a central limited-traffic zone (ZTL Centrale) over much of the old town. Tourist coaches and other M2/M3 buses need a pass (contrassegno) linked to the vehicle, bought through the city mobility portal or the city's mobility app; daily, monthly, half-year and yearly passes exist.
- ZTL hours under the city's May 2024 technical rules: Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 20:00; Friday from 08:00 into the night; Saturday only at night; Sunday 00:00 to 06:00. The Friday and Saturday night hours differ between 1 May to 31 October and 1 November to 30 April. Check the hours for the travel date.
- The streets of the old town are narrow and the market areas are pedestrian; the operator plans set-down points on the main roads around the old town (for example near the Cathedral or the Teatro Massimo) and confirms them before the day.
- The Festino di Santa Rosalia, the city's patron saint festival, fills the old town on the evening of 14 July; expect road closures in the centre.
Palaces and mosaics
The Palazzo dei Normanni with its Cappella Palatina, the Cathedral and the Duomo di Monreale belong to the UNESCO site of Arab-Norman Palermo with the cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale. Book group entry in advance with each site.
Monreale is about 20 minutes up the hill. Its coach parking could not be confirmed from an official source, so the operator settles where the coach stops before the day.
Days out across Sicily
Mondello is about 25 minutes away, and Cefalù and the temple at Segesta about 1 h 20 min each. Agrigento's Valle dei Templi is about 2 h 45 min, and the Villa Romana del Casale at Piazza Armerina about 2 h 55 min.
Those last two are long days. One driver may drive at most 9 hours daily and must stop for 45 minutes within the first 4.5 hours, so an Agrigento return needs a timetable built round the breaks. On the evening of 14 July the feast of Santa Rosalia, the Festino, packs the old town and roads in the centre close.
Questions organisers ask
How long is the run from Palermo airport?
From Punta Raisi (Falcone Borsellino) to the Quattro Canti is about 31 km, roughly 45 minutes by coach when the roads are clear.
Who buys the ZTL pass?
The operator arranges it, because the pass is linked to the coach's number plate. A daily pass suits a short stay; monthly and longer ones exist too.
Can Cefalù and Monreale share one day?
Yes. Monreale is about 9 km from the centre and Cefalù about 72 km, so both fit in a day with time on foot in each.
