Bari Coach Hire for Puglia Tours

Bari is a gateway: the airport is close, the port sits beside the old town and many of Puglia's best-known towns are within about an hour. Coaches stay out of Bari Vecchia, so the plan starts with where the group steps off.

Bari Vecchia is for walking

Bari Vecchia fills the peninsula between the two harbours. It is a ZTL, closed to coaches. Since 1 July 2026 three things have changed: a new gate at the Castello admits only authorised vehicles for loading, Piazzale Mincuzzi's seafront parking is reserved for residents, and Strada Arco Basso has become pedestrian.

The city publishes no coach drop-off point or coach park for the old town. The operator agrees where to stop, on a main road near Bari Vecchia or along the seafront, and tells the group before the day.

Arriving by air, rail and sea

Bari airport (Karol Wojtyła, at Palese) lies some 13 km from Piazza del Ferrarese: about 20 minutes by coach.

Bari Centrale sits on the Adriatic main line, on the south side of the Murat district; it is also where the narrow-gauge railway to Matera begins. The port, with ferry and cruise berths, is next to the old town.

Airports for groups arriving in Bari

  • Bari Airport (BRI) — about 13 km by road to Piazza del Ferrarese, in the old town of Bari, about 20 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Stadiums and arenas a coach can reach

  • Stadio San Nicola — SSC Bari football; designed by Renzo Piano, on the south-west edge of the city
  • PalaFlorio — Indoor sports arena and concert venue

Coach rules in Bari that shape the day

  • Bari Airport (BRI, Karol Wojtyła, at Palese) is about 13 km by road from Piazza del Ferrarese (about 20 min by coach).
  • Bari Centrale station is at the southern edge of the Murat district, on the main Adriatic line; the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane line to Matera also starts here. The port, with ferry and cruise berths, is next to the old town.
  • Bari Vecchia is a limited-traffic zone. Changes in force from 1 July 2026 added a gate at the Castello (Piazza Federico II di Svevia) open only to authorised vehicles for loading and unloading on weekdays from 09:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 18:00, reserved the Piazzale Mincuzzi seafront parking for residents, and made Strada Arco Basso pedestrian. Coaches do not enter the old town.
  • The city publishes no coach drop-off points or coach parks for the old town in the sources checked; the operator confirms the stopping point on the main roads around Bari Vecchia or on the seafront.
  • The Festa di San Nicola (7 to 9 May) brings large crowds, a historic procession and road closures in the old town and on the seafront.
  • Alberobello: coaches set passengers down at a checkpoint on Via Michele Viterbo and then park in the designated coach parks; a daily coach access ticket applies (see Matera for details).

San Nicola and the city

The Basilica di San Nicola holds the relics of St Nicholas and draws Catholic and Orthodox pilgrims. The Festa di San Nicola runs from 7 to 9 May; expect large crowds, a historic procession, and closed roads both in Bari Vecchia and along the seafront. Pilgrim groups visiting then should allow extra time for every pick-up.

The Castello Normanno-Svevo, the Lungomare and the grid of the Murat district fill a half day. The Teatro Petruzzelli and the Fiera del Levante bring event and trade groups to the city.

Puglia and Basilicata by coach

Polignano a Mare is about 45 minutes away, Trani and Monopoli about 55 minutes each. Alberobello takes about 1 h 15 min; there the coach lets the group off at the Via Michele Viterbo checkpoint and parks in a designated area, with a daily ticket. Those rules change often, so check them when booking.

Matera is about 1 h 25 min, Castel del Monte about 1 h 15 min, Ostuni about 1 h 30 min and Lecce about 2 h 20 min. Pairing two of these makes a full day; ask the operator to plan it around the driver's rest.

Questions organisers ask

Can the coach collect us at the Basilica di San Nicola?

Not at the door, because coaches do not enter Bari Vecchia. The operator picks a point on a road skirting the old town or on the seafront, a short walk from the basilica.

Is Bari a good base for Matera?

For a day trip, yes: Matera is about 71 km away, around 1 h 25 min by coach. Coaches there set down on Viale delle Nazioni Unite and then move to a coach park.

What happens at the Fiera del Levante in September?

The Campionaria trade fair fills the seafront exhibition centre west of the city centre. Book coaches and set-down times early for those dates.
