Palermo Airport coach transfers: Punta Raisi, the ZTL Arrivi and the city

Punta Raisi, Palermo's airport, sits by the sea west of the city. The Quattro Canti are roughly 31 km and 45 minutes away by coach. The airport's traffic rules were rewritten in late September 2026, and bay counts may change again with works.

New rules from 5 October 2026

ENAC signed a new ordinance on 28 September 2026, and it takes over from the February 2026 rules on 5 October. The arrivals area is a barrier-controlled ZTL, entered by number-plate reading or card, open to tourist coaches, local buses, cars with driver and taxis.

Inside are six bus bays for setting down and six for scheduled buses picking up. At the exit of the ZTL Arrivi a paid car park holds 15 bays for gran turismo coaches. Where the group boards is agreed with the operator when booking, since the airport names no meeting point.

Fifteen free minutes

Outside both the departures and the arrivals fronts, cameras clock each vehicle, and the first 15 minutes cost nothing. For fifty people with suitcases, that is tight. The coach waits in the coach car park, and the operator decides whether it comes forward or the group walks to it.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Under ENAC Ordinance 4/2026 (Palermo), dated 28 September 2026 and in force from 5 October 2026, the arrivals area has a barrier-controlled limited-traffic zone (ZTL Arrivi) open to local buses and minibuses, tourist coaches, NCC (cars with driver) and taxis, with access by number-plate reading or card. Inside it are 6 bus bays for setting down passengers, 6 bays for scheduled buses picking up and 15 taxi bays. NCC have 22 bays facing the former cargo terminal, 5 bays on the exit road from the west gate and 20 bays in car park P2. The airport publishes no group meeting point: agree it with the operator when booking.

Coach parking and waiting

  • At the exit of the ZTL Arrivi there is a paid, barrier-controlled car park with 15 bays for gran turismo coaches, plus 3 bays shared by police, ambulance and fire service vehicles on urgent duty and NCC vehicles taller than 2.10 m. The controlled-traffic zones in front of the departures and arrivals terminals (ZTC Partenze and ZTC Arrivi) give vehicles 15 minutes free, timed by number-plate cameras.

By road to the city centre

  • about 31 km by road to the Quattro Canti, in the centre of Palermo, about 45 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Into the old town

Palermo's central ZTL covers much of the old town, and coaches need a pass linked to the vehicle. When it is active depends on the weekday and the season, so check it against your date. Inside, lanes are tight and the markets are closed to traffic, so groups step off on the bigger roads that ring the old town; the Cathedral and the Teatro Massimo are typical spots. The operator confirms them before the day.

Monreale and Cefalù

From the airport, Monreale takes around 45 minutes over some 35 km; Cefalù about 104 km, around 1 h 50 min. On the evening of 14 July the Festino di Santa Rosalia fills the old town, with road closures in the centre. Agrigento's Valle dei Templi is about 2 h 45 min from the city, so a return trip uses over half of a driver's 9 hours at the wheel.
