Bari Airport coach transfers: Palese, Bari Vecchia, Matera and the trulli

From the terminal at Palese to Piazza del Ferrarese in old Bari is roughly 13 km, some 20 minutes by coach. The airport is also the usual way into Matera and the Valle d'Itria, so many groups drive straight past Bari on day one.

Stop, board, switch off

The area in front of the terminal has barriers and number-plate reading. Tourist coaches stop on their marked bays only for as long as boarding or setting down takes, passengers and bags included. A longer wait belongs on the dedicated bays.

Engines stay off from arrival to departure, and that includes the auxiliary units that run the air conditioning. On a summer afternoon the coach will be warm when the group boards, so have people ready before it pulls in. The airport names no meeting point; agree one with the operator when booking.

Fifteen minutes, and the third entry

Access to the barrier-controlled area is free for 15 minutes. An operator running repeated transfers in one day is offered cheaper terms; one that has not signed up may pay extra once its vehicles come in a third time that day. Grouping flights into fewer pick-ups keeps things simple.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Under ENAC Ordinance 2/2025 (Puglia-Basilicata), the area in front of the terminal is barrier-controlled with number-plate reading. Tourist coaches may stop, with the engine off, on the bays marked for them only for the time needed to board and set down passengers and luggage, and must use the dedicated bays for any longer wait. The airport publishes no group meeting point: agree it with the operator when booking.

Coach parking and waiting

  • Access to and a stay in the barrier-controlled area are free for 15 minutes. Operators making repeated airport transfers during the day are offered a reduced-rate scheme; without it, a supplement may apply from the third entry of the day. All buses must switch off their engines (including auxiliary engines for air conditioning) for the whole stay. The speed limit on the airport roads is 30 km/h.

By road to the city centre

  • about 13 km by road to Piazza del Ferrarese, in the old town of Bari, about 20 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Matera and the trulli

Matera is roughly 65 km away, measured to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, around 1 h 15 min. Since June 2026 Viale delle Nazioni Unite has been the coach stop, for setting down and picking up only, so the coach drops the group and moves to a coach park. The trulli of Alberobello are about 69 km off, around 1 h 30 min; coaches set down at a checkpoint on Via Michele Viterbo, then park, and the details are checked with the town when booking.

Bari Vecchia

Coaches do not enter Bari's old town, a limited-traffic zone whose rules changed in July 2026. No official coach stop serves it, so the operator fixes where the group gets off, on one of the larger roads skirting it or along the seafront.

Questions organisers ask

Can the coach wait while we clear the arrivals hall?

Only on the dedicated bays, with the engine off. The marked bays by the terminal are for boarding and setting down.

Does Matera fit in a day?

Yes, at about 1 h 15 min each way from the airport. If you add Alberobello, check the plan against the 9-hour daily driving limit.

What happens in early May?

From 7 to 9 May Bari celebrates San Nicola, with big crowds, a procession and closed roads in the old town and along the sea. Plan set-down points away from them.
