Coaches at Four Italian Cruise Ports
A cruise transfer depends on two things: how far the ship docks from where the group is going, and how close a coach may get to the ship. The four ports differ on both.
Rome's port is not in Rome
Civitavecchia is about 71 km from Piazza Venezia, about 1 h 20 min by coach in light traffic, and about 66 km from Fiumicino. No private car reaches the quays; a coach or car with driver going inside the terminal zone carries an access permit, which its operator obtains. Free port shuttles link the berths with Largo della Pace at the port entrance. A Rome excursion from the ship is a long day.
Naples, Genoa and Venice
In Naples the cruise terminal sits in the centre by Piazza Municipio, and Pompeii is about 27 km away. Genoa's two cruise stations lie a short walk from the Piazza Principe railway station. In Venice the berth decides everything: large ships now dock at Fusina or Porto Marghera, so check the cruise documents before planning the transfer.
Questions organisers ask
Can we see Rome on a port day?
Yes, but count the road time: about 1 h 20 min each way before any traffic. Plan the ship's all-aboard time first and work back.
Which Venice terminal will our ship use?
The one on your cruise documents. Passengers of ships berthed at Porto Marghera check in at Marittima.
Can we leave luggage at Civitavecchia?
The terminals have no luggage storage, so keep the bags on the coach if the group tours before boarding.
