Coach Transfers for Venice Cruise Passengers
Venice no longer has one cruise port. Since August 2021 large ships may not pass through the San Marco basin or the Giudecca Canal, and calls are spread over several berths. The coach plan starts with the berth printed on the cruise documents.
Several berths, one question
In 2026 ships called at Fusina, Porto Marghera (Banchina Liguria and Banchina Lombardia), San Basilio and the Marittima, the last for ships up to 25,000 GT. Chioggia was also used while new dedicated cruise facilities are awaited. Lines move ships between berths, so nobody should plan from last season. Send the berth on your documents with the request.

What each berth means for the coach
The Marittima is next to Piazzale Roma, the only part of the historic city a road reaches. The People Mover covers the gap in about 3 minutes and runs from 07:00 until 23:00, with a car about every 8 minutes; walking takes about a quarter of an hour.
San Basilio, in Dorsoduro, lets vehicles in only to drop passengers and luggage; parking there is not possible. Fusina is on the mainland, off the A57 or the SS309 Romea, about 19 km from Piazzale Roma. The Porto Marghera berths lie in the industrial port: passengers do their formalities at the Marittima, and road directions go to operators only.
From ship to coach: what to plan
- Piazzale Roma is the only part of the historic city of Venice that can be reached by road; it has the bus terminal, a taxi rank and car parks.
- Marittima is linked to Piazzale Roma by the People Mover, an elevated shuttle that runs 07:00-23:00 about every 8 minutes and takes about 3 minutes; the walk takes about 15 minutes.
- Venezia Santa Lucia railway station is about 350 m on foot from Piazzale Roma, across the Ponte della Costituzione.
- At San Basilio, vehicles may enter the gate only for the time needed to set down passengers and luggage; there is no parking at the terminal. Public waterbuses stop at San Basilio.
- Fusina is reached by road from the A57 and the SS309 Romea, via Via dell'Elettronica and Via Autostrade del Mare; it is about 19 km by road from Piazzale Roma (about 30 min by coach in light traffic).
- The Marghera berths are reached through the industrial port, and the road directions are published for operators only; groups check in at Marittima.
- Venice charges day visitors an access fee (contributo di accesso) on set days of the year; the calendar is published on the city's official site.
Airports for this port
- Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) — about 15 km, about 25 min by coach in light traffic (from Piazzale Roma); Fusina is about 23 km (about 40 min)
The coach pass and Tronchetto
Tourist coaches need an AVM pass for the ZTL BUS, which covers almost the whole municipality, Mestre included. The operator buys it. Tronchetto's coach area allows short stops of 1 hour; a 2026 trial by the People Mover stop allowed 2 hours until 31 October. Ask the operator what applies on your date.
Day visitors to the old city pay an access fee on set days. Check the city's calendar when you fix the date.
Questions organisers ask
How far is Marco Polo airport?
About 15 km from Piazzale Roma, around 25 min by coach in light traffic. From Fusina it is about 23 km, roughly 40 min.
Can the coach take the group to San Marco?
No. Coaches stop at Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or Fusina, and the group walks or goes on by water. Fusina has coach parking and boats across the lagoon.
Where do we meet the coach after a Marghera call?
Passengers of ships at Marghera complete their formalities at the Marittima. The operator confirms the stopping point once the berth is known.
