Minibus Rental Across Italy

The midi-coach (midibus)

A midibus seats about 29 to 35. It suits a group too large for a minibus and too small to fill a coach, and in Italy it is often the vehicle that can actually reach the place: hill towns, coast roads, villa drives.

Where the smaller size pays

Buses over 10.36 m are banned from the coast road between Positano and Vietri, so a midibus within that length is the biggest vehicle that can work the coast; the operator confirms the length. A 2026 ordinance limited the road up to Ravello to buses of 9.30 m or less, and the operator checks whether it still applies. Around Lake Como and in the Chianti hills, a midibus takes bends and narrow lanes where a full-size coach struggles.

Seats and luggage

  • Seats: 29-35
  • Luggage: Underfloor or rear luggage space, smaller than a full-size coach

Rules and equipment on board

  • Easier than a full-size coach on narrow roads, in hill towns and at small venues
  • With more than 16 passenger seats, or longer than 8 m, it needs a category D licence rather than D1 (art. 116 c. 3 n and p, Codice della Strada)
  • It is hired with a driver under Legge 218/2003, like a full-size coach
  • In Italy the driving time and its checks follow Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 (art. 174 c. 1, Codice della Strada): at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week) and a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours
  • On a single occasional coach trip, national or international, the driver may postpone the weekly rest for up to 12 days

Licence and law

With more than 16 passenger seats, or more than 8 m long, a D licence is needed instead of D1. The midibus is hired under Legge 218/2003 like any coach, with the period, duration and total agreed in advance.

Drivers' hours follow Regulation (EC) No 561/2006: 9 hours at the wheel a day, 10 on two days a week, and a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours. On a single occasional trip the weekly rest can wait up to 12 days, which makes a midibus tour of a week or more workable with one driver.

Luggage and longer tours

Luggage goes underfloor or at the rear, in less space than on a full-size coach. For day trips and weddings that is rarely a problem. A group of 30 on a week's tour with large suitcases may need a full-size coach for the bags alone, so give the luggage count on the request.

Questions organisers ask

Does a midibus face the same city rules as a coach?

Yes: permits, set-down points and emission classes. Naples waives its coach ZTL ticket only for short vehicles, up to 7.36 m and Euro 4 or newer, so the exact length matters there.

Does a midibus have seat belts?

The same rule as on any bus applies: belts are worn by every seated passenger over three.

Can a midibus do the Cinque Terre?

Not to the villages themselves. It drops the group in La Spezia or Levanto, and trains or boats do the rest.
