Minibus Rental Across Italy

Coach transfers to and from Italian cruise ports

Italy's four big cruise ports work very differently. Naples and Genoa have terminals in the city centre. Civitavecchia is Rome's port but more than an hour away. In Venice the large ships no longer reach the old terminal, so the berth decides the transfer.

Civitavecchia is not Rome

Largo della Pace, at the port entrance, is about 71 km from Piazza Venezia, roughly 1 h 20 min by coach, and about 66 km from Fiumicino, about an hour. A shore excursion into Rome is therefore a long day with little slack. Private cars cannot reach the quays; free port shuttles run between every berth and Largo della Pace.

A coach or car with driver that enters the terminal areas needs an access permit from the terminal operator, which the vehicle's operator arranges. The terminals have no luggage storage, so a group with hours between check-out and boarding keeps its bags on the coach.

Naples and Genoa: terminals in town

The Stazione Marittima in Naples stands by Piazza del Municipio, about 20 minutes from the airport. Pompeii is about 35 minutes away and Herculaneum about 20. A coach parks only in listed areas, among them Via Nuova Marina for long stays and Via Depretis for short ones, and needs the city's ticket for its coach zones.

Genoa's terminals at Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria are a short walk from Piazza Principe station. The big airports are far away: Linate about 2 h 10 min, Pisa about 2 h 25 min, Malpensa about 2 h 45 min. Genoa's own airport, about 20 minutes off, is the nearest. Neither port publishes an official coach stop at the terminal, so the operator confirms the stopping point.

Rules the organiser should know

  • Civitavecchia is Rome's cruise port: central Rome is about 71 km by road (about 1 h 20 min by coach in light traffic), and free port shuttles link every berth with Largo della Pace at the port entrance
  • Genoa's cruise terminals at Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria are a few minutes on foot from Genova Piazza Principe railway station
  • Check the berth on the cruise documents before planning a Venice transfer: Fusina is about 19 km by road from Piazzale Roma

Venice: check the berth first

Since August 2021 ships over 25,000 GT may not pass San Marco or the Giudecca Canal, so large ships berth at Fusina or Porto Marghera, while Marittima takes smaller ones. Passengers on ships at Marghera still check in at Marittima. At San Basilio vehicles may set down but not park. Read the berth on the cruise documents before booking: Fusina is about 30 minutes from Piazzale Roma.

Questions organisers ask

Can a coach meet passengers at the ship in Civitavecchia?

Only with the terminal operator's access permit. Otherwise passengers take the port shuttle to Largo della Pace and board the coach there.

How long from Marco Polo airport to the Venice terminals?

About 25 minutes to Piazzale Roma, which the People Mover links to Marittima in about 3 minutes. Fusina is about 40 minutes from the airport.

Which port suits a Pompeii excursion?

Naples. The site is about 27 km from the terminal. Book group entry with the archaeological park in advance.
