Coach and Driver Hire in Naples

Naples has a simple rule with big consequences: a tourist coach may park only in the listed coach areas, nowhere else in the city. Pick the area for each stop first, and the day falls into place around it.

The ticket for the four zones

Since 2025 the city has made permanent a ticket for every passenger vehicle that has over eight seats in addition to the driver's. It goes on the windscreen to enter four zones: Toledo-Decumani-Carmine, Centro Storico, San Martino and Posillipo. Inside Toledo-Decumani-Carmine, authorised coaches keep to set streets such as Corso Umberto I.

Some vehicles are exempt, among them coaches carrying school groups from schools in the metropolitan area, if the coach is Euro 6, and small vehicles up to 7.36 m long of Euro 4 or later. A few of these require a yearly application; the operator works out which one fits.

Short stops by the sights

For the archaeological museum, the coach stops briefly on Piazza Museo Nazionale, before the steps. For Spaccanapoli and the Duomo, Piazza Cavour at Porta San Gennaro and Via Depretis are the nearby short-stay areas. For the Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito and Castel dell'Ovo, use Via Cesario Console, Via Chiatamone or Piazza Vittoria. The Catacombs on Via Capodimonte have their own short-stay area outside the zones.

After that the coach moves to a long-stay area, such as Piazza Carlo III, Via Brin or the space in front of the Maradona stadium.

Coach rules in Naples that shape the day

  • Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli (NAP, Capodichino) is about 8 km by road from Piazza del Municipio, about 20 min by coach in light traffic. Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • Coach ZTLs: by Deliberazione di Giunta Comunale n. 111 of 25 March 2025 (Ordinanza n. 610 of the same day), the City of Naples made permanent the rule that vehicles carrying people with more than eight seats besides the driver pay a ticket and display it on the windscreen to enter the ZTLs "Centro Storico", "Posillipo", "San Martino" and "Toledo - Decumani - Carmine".
  • Tourist coaches may not park anywhere in the city except in the listed coach areas. Long-stay areas outside the coach ZTLs: Piazza Carlo III, Via Ponte della Maddalena, Via Volta, Via Brin, Via Ferraris, Piazzale D'Annunzio, Via Giulio Cesare, Via Galeota, in front of the Stadio Maradona, Viale Giochi del Mediterraneo, Viale Marconi, Viale Kennedy, Via Pansini and beside the Scampia station.
  • Long-stay areas inside the coach ZTLs: Viale Virgilio, Via Manzoni, Via Boccaccio, Viale Dohrn, Via Nuova Marina, Via Vespucci, Via Caracciolo (at the Fontana del Sebeto), Via Foria (between Piazza Carlo III and the Orto Botanico) and the link road between Via Vespucci and Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi.
  • Short-stay areas include Piazza Museo Nazionale, Piazza Cavour (Porta San Gennaro), Via Casanova, Via Depretis, Via De Gasperi, Via Guglielmo Sanfelice, Via Cesario Console, Via Chiatamone, Piazza Vittoria, Riviera di Chiaia (Villa Pignatelli), Via Caracciolo, Viale Virgilio, Via Petrarca and Piazza Vanvitelli, and, outside the ZTLs, Piazza Carlo III, Via Capodimonte (Catacombs) and Corso Meridionale.
  • In the ZTL "Toledo - Decumani - Carmine" authorised coaches may drive only on set streets (among them Corso Umberto I and, in one direction, Via Monteoliveto). The main access gates (varchi) include Via Vespucci, Via Casanova, Corso Amedeo di Savoia, Via Salvator Rosa, Via Tasso, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Sannazaro, Via Caracciolo, Via Coroglio, Via Manzoni and Via Scarlatti.
  • Exempt from the coach ZTL ticket (some after an annual exemption application): scheduled public transport, school buses, Euro 6 coaches carrying school groups from schools in the Città Metropolitana di Napoli, vehicles up to 7.36 m long of Euro 4 or later, and vehicles with an NCC licence issued by the City of Naples.
  • Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) is the main railway station, with high-speed trains to Roma, Firenze and Milano; the Circumvesuviana trains to Ercolano, Pompei and Sorrento leave from Porta Nolana and Piazza Garibaldi. Molo Beverello, by Piazza del Municipio, is the ferry and hydrofoil port for Capri, Ischia and Procida.
  • Under Article 142(3)(f) of the Codice della Strada (D.Lgs. 285/1992), buses and coaches with a maximum laden mass over 8 tonnes may drive at up to 100 km/h on motorways (autostrade) and up to 80 km/h on other roads outside built-up areas. Lower signed limits always apply.
  • Under Article 172(6) of the Codice della Strada, every occupant over three years old of a minibus or coach (vehicle categories M2 and M3) must wear the seat belt fitted to their seat while seated; passengers must be informed of this by signs or pictograms at each seat (Article 172(7)).
  • EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest, recorded by the tachograph.
  • Most Italian motorways (autostrade) are tolled (pedaggio): the toll is paid at the toll stations or by electronic toll device, by vehicle class. Toll amounts are not given here.

Pompeii, Vesuvius and the coast

Herculaneum is about 20 minutes away, Pompeii about 35 and the road up Vesuvius to the crater path about 40. The Reggia di Caserta is about 40 minutes too, so two sites in a day is realistic. Sorrento is about 1 h 10 min. The Amalfi Coast road, the SS163, is closed to coaches longer than 10.36 m or taller than 4 m. That rules out a full-size coach for Positano or Amalfi; ask for a smaller vehicle for that day.

Islands and stations

Capri, Ischia and Procida boats leave from Molo Beverello, beside Piazza del Municipio. Napoli Centrale on Piazza Garibaldi has high-speed trains to Rome, about 3 h 5 min by coach.

Questions organisers ask

How close is the airport?

Naples International Airport at Capodichino lies some 8 km from the Piazza del Municipio, around 20 minutes by coach when the roads are clear. At peak times it can take much longer.

Where does a coach meet a cruise group?

No official coach stop at the cruise terminal is published, so the meeting point is agreed with the operator when the ship's arrival time is known.

Can the coach wait near the Mostra d'Oltremare?

Yes. The area in front of the Stadio Maradona is a long-stay coach area, and Piazzale Tecchio and Via Giulio Cesare nearby have more, which suits a congress or a match in Fuorigrotta.
