Naples Airport coach transfers: Capodichino, the city and the Sorrento coast

Capodichino sits almost in town: Piazza del Municipio is about 8 km away. Near is not the same as quick: at peak times that run often takes far longer than its 20 minutes. Agree where the coach meets the group before anything else.

No named coach pick-up

The airport's traffic rules allow tourist coaches onto the yellow-marked central lane beside the terminal, but purely to let people and luggage off. Nowhere do they say where a tourist coach should collect a group. The meeting point, and the place where the coach waits, are therefore settled with the operator when you book, not found on arrival.

Parking anywhere else on the airport roads is forbidden at all hours, and vehicles can be towed. A coach cannot simply park at the kerb while the group queues for bags, so send the flight number and let the operator time the pick-up.

Late flights

Between 22:30 and 03:30 Capodichino is shut, unless a delay is exceptional. A late-evening arrival still needs its coach at the right time, and the hotel needs to know the group will check in late. Keep the closure in mind when choosing flights for a school group.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Under ENAC Ordinance 3/2025 (Campania), tourist coaches, scheduled buses, taxis, NCC (cars with driver) and authorised shuttles may stop on the yellow bays of the 'corsia centrale ZTC', next to the terminal, only to set down passengers and luggage. NCC pick up and set down in the barrier-controlled passenger car parks, and NCC vans taller than 2.0 m may use the 'Pick Up' area. Scheduled extra-urban buses use the yellow bays in the bus car park 'PBUS', next to car park P1. The airport publishes no group meeting point or separate pick-up point for tourist coaches: agree the meeting point and where the coach will wait with the operator when booking.

Coach parking and waiting

  • Parking is forbidden everywhere on the airport roads except in the marked areas, around the clock, and vehicles may be removed. People collecting passengers by car get 15 minutes free in the 'Pick-up' area opposite arrivals. The airport is closed from 22:30 to 03:30 except for exceptional delays.

By road to the city centre

  • about 8 km by road to Piazza del Municipio, by the port of Napoli, about 20 min in light traffic; often much longer at peak times

Into Naples

Vehicles with more than eight passenger seats pay a ticket to enter the city's coach ZTLs, the historic centre among them, and display it on the windscreen. Coaches park only in listed areas. The operator deals with the ticket; you give the hotel address and any set-down you need, such as Molo Beverello for the boats to Capri.

Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

Pompeii comes first: some 27 km to the Porta Marina entrance of the excavations, roughly 35 minutes. Sorrento's Piazza Tasso is about 51 km, around 1 h 15 min. Amalfi is about 64 km, around 1 h 25 min, on a narrow coast road that is slow in summer.

Full-size coaches are banned from the Amalfi Coast road, the SS163, so a group bound for Positano or Amalfi travels in a midi coach or minibus. Tell the operator the final hotel, not just the town.

Questions organisers ask

Can the group take the metro?

No. A Line 1 station at Capodichino is still being built. The Alibus goes to Napoli Centrale in around 15 minutes and to the port in around 35.

Can we go straight to Sorrento?

Yes: about 51 km by road, around 1 h 15 min in light traffic. Summer traffic on the coast adds time.

Which roads lead to the airport?

It sits off the Tangenziale di Napoli and the A1, A3 and A16 motorways, at the Capodichino-Aeroporto exit.
