Lucca by Coach: Gates, Tickets and Day Trips
Lucca keeps coaches outside its walls and asks for a ticket before they arrive. Buy it in advance, choose the gate nearest the first visit, and the rest is a short walk.
Buy the coach ticket before arrival
Every tourist coach entering Lucca needs a coach ticket bought online, in advance, on the city parking company's portal. It must be in hand before the coach enters the coach limited-traffic area, called the green zone. Shown at the front of the coach throughout the stay, it is valid from the moment of arrival until 10:00 next morning.
School groups, groups staying in Lucca hotels and groups with a booked meal can get a reduced ticket, but only if they ask for it three or more days ahead of arrival. Mention it when you book.

Four gates for set-down
The four set-down points are Porta Elisa, Porta San Pietro, Porta Santa Maria and Piazzale Boccherini, for a brief stop only. The coach then waits out the visit in the Palatucci coach park (Via delle Tagliate di S. Anna) and comes back for the pick-up.
Inside the green zone coaches keep to the signed routes. Agree the pick-up gate and time with the group leader before people scatter, and put both on the printed programme.

Coach rules in Lucca that shape the day
- Pisa International Airport (PSA) is about 35 km by road from Piazza San Michele (about 40 min by coach). Firenze Airport (FLR) is about 71 km (about 1 h 5 min).
- Lucca station is just south of the walls (Piazza Ricasoli), on the line between Firenze, Pisa and Viareggio.
- Coaches do not enter the walled city. Tourist coaches entering Lucca need a coach ticket bought online in advance on the city parking company's portal, before entering the coach limited-traffic zone (green zone). The ticket is displayed on the front of the coach for the whole stay and is valid from arrival until 10:00 the next day. Reduced tickets (for example school groups, groups staying in Lucca hotels or with a booked meal) must be requested at least three days before arrival.
- Drop-off and pick-up: coaches stop briefly to set down and pick up at Piazzale Boccherini, Porta San Pietro, Porta Elisa or Porta Santa Maria, and then wait at the Palatucci coach park (Via delle Tagliate di S. Anna) until the visit ends. Coaches may cross the green zone only on the signed routes.
- Lucca Comics & Games runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026, with very large crowds inside and around the walls, special traffic measures and full hotels. Plan coach movements and pick-ups well ahead and check the event's mobility plan.
On foot inside the walls
The walls are complete, about 4 km round, with a tree-lined walk on top. Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, San Michele in Foro, the cathedral of San Martino and the Torre Guinigi are all a short walk apart, and Puccini's birthplace is close to San Michele.
The station is a short walk south of the walls, served by trains between Florence, Pisa and Viareggio. A group arriving by train can be met there and taken on to a hotel in the hills or on the Versilia coast.
Comics week and Tuscan days
This year Lucca Comics & Games takes over the town from 28 October until 1 November 2026. Crowds fill the town and the Polo Fiere, special traffic measures apply and hotels sell out. Book the coach early and check the event's mobility plan.
Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli is about 35 minutes away, Collodi the same, Viareggio about 40 minutes. Florence and La Spezia are each about 1 h 15 min. San Gimignano is about 1 h 50 min and Siena about 2 h 15 min, a full day for one driver.
