La Spezia Coach Hire for the Cinque Terre
A coach takes a group to La Spezia. From there the Cinque Terre are reached by train or by boat. Plan it that way from the start.
Why the coach stops in La Spezia
Each of the five villages lies at the bottom of a steep, narrow road, and none has real space for a coach. The Comune di Riomaggiore says as much in its own 2026 coach ordinance: the Cinque Terre are reached by rail and sea from La Spezia. Levanto, on the western side, is the other base.
La Spezia Centrale is the station for the villages. The regional trains are joined in season by the Cinque Terre Express, which in 2026 shuttles between La Spezia and Levanto with a stop in every village from 14 March until 1 November. In season, boats also leave from the seafront.

Coach parks and set-down in the city
Outside the city's listed coach areas, parking a coach is not allowed. All-day places are at Park Pozzoli (Via Carducci) and, in small numbers, on Via Valdilocchi. To drop people quickly, use the sea side of Viale Italia, close to the boats, for up to 15 minutes, while Viale Fieschi, next to the naval arsenal, allows half an hour.
Reservations and payment go online, via the city's parking company. Arrange it together with the coach, not on the morning of the trip.

Coach rules in La Spezia that shape the day
- Pisa International Airport (PSA) is about 85 km by road from La Spezia city centre (about 1 h 20 min by coach). Genova Airport (GOA) is about 115 km (about 2 h).
- La Spezia Centrale is the railway gateway to the Cinque Terre. In 2026 the seasonal Cinque Terre Express trains run from 14 March to 1 November between La Spezia and Levanto, stopping in all five villages, on top of the regular regional trains. The Cinque Terre Card in its train version covers these trains.
- Coach parking in La Spezia: coaches may not park anywhere in the city except the listed coach areas, unless the city mobility office grants an exception. Coaches may park all day at Park Pozzoli (Via Carducci) and in Via Valdilocchi (limited places). Short stops to load and unload: up to 15 minutes in Viale Italia, seaward side (near the boats to the Cinque Terre and Palmaria), and up to 30 minutes in Viale Fieschi, by the arsenal. Parking is booked and paid online through the municipal parking company. The coach park "Le Terrazze" has been out of use since 18 October 2024.
- Cinque Terre by coach: the villages sit at the end of steep, narrow roads and have almost no room for coaches. The Comune di Riomaggiore states in its 2026 coach ordinance that access to the Cinque Terre is assured by rail and sea from La Spezia, so coaches are not needed to reach the villages. Plan the visit as coach to La Spezia (or Levanto), then train or boat.
- Manarola (Comune di Riomaggiore) in 2026, ordinance no. 7 of 30 December 2025: tourist coaches may enter the Manarola limited-traffic zone only from 08:00 to 20:00, one coach per hour, to the stop area at Acquarino, with a booked arrival slot linked to a booked departure slot on the same day. A coach more than 10 minutes late is refused; early coaches wait at the coach park at Zorza. No exceptions are allowed. Coaches may not enter at all on 3 to 6 April, 24 to 26 April, 30 April to 3 May, 30 May to 2 June and 9 to 16 August 2026.
- Group rules in the villages: from 2026 the Cinque Terre towns are bringing in limits for guided groups (25 people per group in Riomaggiore and Manarola, earpieces above 10 people, no loudspeakers, no group stops on stairways, in tunnels and on narrow lanes). Check the rule of each village before the trip.
- Monterosso al Mare restricts private tour coaches to dropping off guests of Monterosso hotels, outside daytime hours and on request to the municipal police. Levanto admits at most 10 tourist coaches a day into its coach limited-traffic zone (ordinance no. 62 of 16 October 2025), each with a daily permit booked in advance, with exceptions for coaches going to Levanto hotels and restaurants. Lerici has no coach parking; coaches need a transit authorisation requested by e-mail several days ahead.
- Weather alerts close the Cinque Terre paths and can stop tourist coaches: on 20 August 2026 Riomaggiore closed paths, visits and tourist coach access for an orange weather alert. Check the regional alert level (Protezione Civile Liguria) on the day.
Manarola, Levanto and Lerici
In 2026 Manarola lets in a single coach per hour, from 08:00 to 20:00, and only with a booked arrival slot paired with a booked departure slot. A coach running more than 10 minutes behind is turned away. Some days are closed altogether. The 2027 rules are not published yet.
Levanto caps tourist coaches at 10 a day; each needs its own day permit, reserved ahead. Lerici has no coach parking at all; a coach needs a transit authorisation requested by e-mail several days ahead. For Portovenere, the operator confirms where the coach can stop.
Groups in the villages
From 2026 Riomaggiore and Manarola cap guided groups at 25, require earpieces above 10 people and ban group stops on stairways and narrow lanes. Check each village's own rules. On the Via dell'Amore, walkers go one way only, from Riomaggiore towards Manarola, at a reserved entry time; a group of up to 30 reserves and pays beforehand.
Weather can close everything. On 20 August 2026 an orange alert shut the paths, visits and coach access at Riomaggiore. Check the Liguria civil protection level on the day and keep a second plan ready, such as Sarzana or the marble quarries at Carrara.
Questions organisers ask
Can the coach drive us to Monterosso?
Plan on the train instead. Monterosso limits coach drop-offs to hotel guests, outside daytime hours and on request to the town police, and that rule should be checked with the town before booking.
Which airport serves La Spezia?
Pisa, about 85 km away and around 1 h 20 min by coach. Genoa airport is about 115 km, roughly two hours.
Is a day trip from Florence realistic?
It is a long one: about 150 km and around 2 h 20 min each way. Drivers' hours count, so ask the operator to set out the timetable on the quote.
