Malpensa coach transfers: two terminals, timed lanes and a long run to Milan
Malpensa is not on Milan's doorstep. It lies about 53 km from the Duomo, north-west of the city near Varese, so a group's first hour in Italy is usually spent on the motorway. The airport is strict about who stops where, and for how long.
Terminal 1 or Terminal 2
The two terminals stand apart; a free shuttle bus links them, and so do the Malpensa Express trains. Coaches stop differently at each, so the terminal printed on the ticket decides where the coach goes. Check it a few days before the flight and send it with the passenger list.

Fifteen minutes, timed by camera
At Terminal 1, cameras time every vehicle in the arrivals and departures zones, with a 15-minute maximum. The reserved arrivals lane sits behind a barrier and is open only to authorised vehicles; operators apply to the airport in advance. The coach park on the station level belongs to the airport coach lines, and the free Polmone waiting area is closed to professional transport.
At Terminal 2, buses pick up from bays in the reserved lanes on the north arrivals front, and the departure kerb is for setting down only. These rules come from an ENAC ordinance of August 2026 and are revised often, so the operator arranges airport access and nobody should promise a bay. The airport names no group meeting point either: fix one inside arrivals when you book.
Where the coach meets the group
- The landside roads are governed by ENAC Ordinance 7/2026 (Malpensa), in force since August 2026. At Terminal 1 departures, the free-flow left-hand lane is open to shuttles, minivans and similar vehicles carrying groups, for up to 15 minutes. At Terminal 1 arrivals, the reserved lane is barrier-controlled and open only to authorised vehicles, including the NCC (car with driver) parking areas set aside in the arrivals zone; operators that need the reserved lanes apply to the airport operator in advance. At Terminal 2, the reserved lanes on the north arrivals front have bays for buses to pick up passengers, NCC vehicles use a reserved area reached from the free-flow lanes, and at departures the kerb bays may be used by taxis and authorised buses only for the time needed to set passengers down. The airport publishes no group meeting point: agree it with the operator when booking.
Coach parking and waiting
- Across the Terminal 1 arrivals and departures zones the maximum transit time is 15 minutes, timed by number-plate cameras (the 'PA-ZTC' system). The barrier-controlled bus parking at the Terminal 1 railway station level is only for the airport coach lines that hold an agreement with the airport. The free 'Polmone' waiting area between the terminals (60 minutes) is closed to professional passenger transport, including NCC, shuttles and vehicles over the posted size. At Terminal 2, the lanes heading south from the roundabout exclude buses and vehicles over 10 m.
By road to the city centre
- about 53 km by road to Piazza del Duomo, in the centre of Milano, about 1 h 5 min in light traffic; longer at peak times
Into Milan
The drive to Piazza del Duomo takes about 1 h 5 min in light traffic, longer at rush hour. In the centre, Area C admits only Euro VI buses on weekdays, so the operator checks the vehicle's eligibility. Groups step off at Piazza Castello or Via Marina, the two official coach points, and walk from there.
Lakes and Turin without entering Milan
Plenty of groups skip the city altogether. Como is about 52 km from the airport, around an hour; Stresa on Lake Maggiore about 51 km, around 1 h 5 min; Turin about 137 km, around 2 hours. After an overnight long-haul flight, count the whole day against the driver's limit of 9 hours at the wheel.
Questions organisers ask
Is Malpensa or Linate better for a group?
Linate is about 7 km from the Duomo, Malpensa about 53 km. Flights usually decide it, but a Linate arrival saves the best part of an hour on the road.
Can the coach wait at the kerb while we collect bags?
No. At Terminal 1 the limit is 15 minutes and the Polmone area is closed to coaches. The operator plans where the coach waits and when it comes in.
Would the train be simpler?
The Malpensa Express runs every 30 minutes from both terminals to Milano Cadorna and to Milano Centrale. With heavy luggage or a hotel away from those stations, the coach is simpler.
