Florence Airport coach transfers: three bays and a city-wide bus ZTL

Florence airport is small and close, about 10 km from the Duomo. Its coach area is smaller still: three bays, one of them kept for emergencies. A group coach here works to a tight slot, so timing matters more than distance.

Two bays in normal use

Since March 2026, buses entering the airport stop and wait only in the P bus car park. With one of its three bays reserved for emergencies, two coaches fit at once, and each may stay just for the time the job requires.

Engines are switched off on arrival and restarted at most 5 minutes before the coach leaves. On a hot day, board promptly rather than expecting a cooled coach to sit waiting. No official group meeting point exists here either, so agree one with the operator when booking.

A bus ZTL across the whole city

Florence's bus ZTL covers the entire built-up area, day and night. A coach may drive or park only with a permit bought online before it enters. In the historic centre coaches follow set routes to official stops, and Piazza Savonarola is for set-down only.

Groups staying in the city with the coach at their disposal use a different permit from day visitors. Give the operator the hotel address and the plan for each day, and the permit follows from that.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Under ENAC Ordinance 1/2026 (Toscana), in force since 2 March 2026, buses that enter the airport stop and wait only in the bus car park ('P bus'), which has 3 bays, one of them kept for emergencies. NCC (cars with driver) use their own marked bays and may not stop elsewhere. The airport publishes no group meeting point: agree it with the operator when booking.

Coach parking and waiting

  • With only 3 coach bays, stops are limited to the time needed for the service, and engines must be switched off on arrival and started no more than 5 minutes before departure. In the short-stay car park P1 the free stay for cars is 10 minutes.

By road to the city centre

  • about 10 km by road to Piazza del Duomo, in the centre of Firenze, about 25 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Pisa, the other gateway

Some flights land at Pisa instead, about 85 km from Piazza del Duomo and around 1 h 40 min by coach. The coach is the same; the transfer is longer. The T2 tram also runs from Florence airport into the centre, which suits a couple of late arrivals.

On to Siena or San Gimignano

San Gimignano is about 63 km from the airport, around 1 h 20 min; Siena's Piazza del Campo about 87 km, around 1 h 45 min; Pisa about 93 km, around 1 h 30 min. Siena has its own coach permit rules, so mention it early if it is the first night's stop.

Questions organisers ask

What if two coaches arrive together?

Two bays are in normal use, so it can work, but a third coach cannot join them. For a larger group the operator times the coaches one after another.

Can a car with driver collect us?

Yes. NCC cars use their own marked bays at the airport and may not stop anywhere else.

How long can a private car stay at the terminal?

Ten minutes free in short-stay car park P1. That suits a relative meeting one traveller, not a group.
