Minibus Rental Across Italy

Bologna Airport coach transfers: one reserved lane, fourteen bus bays

For a coach, Bologna is a straightforward airport. A reserved lane on the ground floor offers 14 spaces for buses and minibuses, behind barriers that read number plates. The harder part comes later, in the historic centre.

The reserved lane

Arrivals are on the ground floor, departures on the first. The reserved lane on the ground floor serves taxis, cars with driver, buses and other authorised vehicles, with entry through two barriers. The operator makes sure the coach is cleared to pass them.

The Kiss&Fly areas in front of the terminal admit only cars up to 1.85 m, and for ten minutes at most, so they are no place for a coach. There is no official spot for groups to gather, so settle one with the operator when booking.

Setting down in Bologna

Piazza Maggiore is about 11 km away, around 25 minutes. By day, from 07:00 until 20:00, tourist coaches stay out of the old centre; the exception is a coach bound for a hotel, whose plates the hotel passes to the city. The source for this is a list from ANAV, the coach operators' body, not the city itself, so ask the operator to confirm it.

Otherwise coaches set down at Piazza di Porta San Mamolo for up to 20 minutes, or at Piazza Malpighi inside the ZTL for 5 minutes with a daily ticket bought online beforehand. Parking is at the Autostazione, the bus station, which takes bookings for tourist coaches.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Under ENAC Ordinance 6/2024 (Emilia-Romagna), a reserved lane on the ground floor serves the airport transport services, with 14 bays for buses and minibuses, 22 bays for NCC (cars with driver) plus 10 bays shared by taxis and NCC for drop-off, and 60 taxi bays. Its two entrances have automatic barriers with number-plate reading and admit taxis, NCC, buses and other authorised vehicles. The airport publishes no group meeting point: agree it with the operator when booking.

Coach parking and waiting

  • Parking is forbidden on all airport roads outside the marked areas, around the clock. The Kiss&Fly areas in front of the terminal (arrivals on the ground floor, departures on the first floor) are for cars up to 1.85 m high and a maximum of 10 minutes (3 hours for disabled badge holders). Car hire has 3 bays for vans and minibuses in car park P3.

By road to the city centre

  • about 11 km by road to Piazza Maggiore, in the centre of Bologna, about 25 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Train or coach

The Marconi Express monorail reaches Bologna Centrale in about 7 minutes, and Bologna Centrale is a high-speed rail hub. For a group catching a train on to Florence or Venice, the monorail may be all it needs. For a hotel in town, a school group or anyone with heavy bags, book the coach.

Runs out of Bologna

Modena is about 42 km from the airport, around 50 minutes; Florence some 108 km, roughly 1 h 40 min. Under Bologna Città 30, most city streets carry a 30 km/h limit, with higher limits on main roads, so the town legs take a little longer than the map suggests.

Questions organisers ask

Can the coach wait at the airport?

Its bays are in the reserved lane, and no parking is allowed anywhere else on the airport roads, day or night. The operator plans the wait around the flight.

Can a minibus use the same lane?

Yes. The 14 bays are for buses and minibuses alike.

When does the monorail run?

From 05:40 to midnight, every 7 to 15 minutes. For an early departure, check the first run against the check-in time.
