Hiring a Coach and Driver in Milan

Milan lets coaches into the centre, at a cost and with conditions. Area C, inside the old bastions, is a charged zone on weekdays, and only Euro VI buses may drive in it. Everything else in the plan follows from those two facts.

Area C on weekdays

Area C and the wider Area B apply on weekdays between 07:30 and 19:30. A coach or hired bus with more than 9 seats pays a daily Area C charge, banded by length, and that charge includes 5 hours in the coach parking areas. It is activated online by midnight of the following day or at a parking meter on the day.

Since October 2023 the city has kept buses other than Euro VI out of Area C. The operator checks the vehicle's eligibility before confirming, so ask for the emission class on the quote. School trips for primary and middle-school pupils use a separate pass, bought online only.

Two places to step off

In the centre, coaches drop and collect groups at two official points: Piazza Castello, by the Sforza castle, and Via Marina, nearest to Brera. The Duomo, the Galleria and La Scala are a short walk from either, so the group walks in rather than looking for a kerb by the cathedral.

Once everyone is off, the coach leaves for a listed parking area, such as Via del Burchiello or Via Città di Fiume. The 5 included hours start at the meter with the PIN received on activation.

Coach rules in Milan that shape the day

  • Milano Malpensa (MXP) is about 53 km by road from Piazza del Duomo, about 1 h 5 min by coach in light traffic; Milano Linate (LIN) is about 7 km, about 20 min; Milan Bergamo airport (BGY, Orio al Serio) is about 56 km, about 1 h 10 min. Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • Milan has two traffic-restriction zones, active Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 19:30: Area B covers most of the city and bans the most polluting vehicles (access, when allowed, is free); Area C is the city centre inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni and is a charged zone.
  • Area C and coaches: tourist coaches and hired buses with a driver (NCC) with more than 9 seats pay a daily Area C charge, banded by length (up to 8 m, up to 10.50 m, over 10.50 m), which includes 5 hours of parking in the coach areas. It is activated online on the "My Area C" site by midnight of the following day, or at a parking meter on the day of access.
  • Area C emission rule for buses: the City of Milan bars buses and coaches (M2 and M3) other than Euro VI from entering and driving in Area C; the ban started on 1 October 2023, with a deferral that ended on 30 June 2024 for owners who had already ordered a replacement. Check the eligibility of the vehicle booked before travel.
  • Coach parking areas listed by YesMilano: Via del Burchiello / Via Pagano, Via Città di Fiume / Bastioni di Porta Venezia, Via Valtellina (between Via dell'Aprica and Via A. da Brescia), Via Mugello / Via Monte Ortigara and Via Carbonera. The 5 free hours included in the Area C charge are activated at the parking meter with the PIN received on activation (Monday to Friday).
  • Official coach set-down and pick-up points in the city centre: Piazza Castello and Via Marina.
  • School excursions: coaches with more than 9 seats carrying primary and middle-school pupils use a separate "NCC - School Excursions" Area C pass, bought online only on "My Area C" and activated by midnight of the day of access.
  • Milano Centrale (Piazza Duca d'Aosta) is the main railway station, with high-speed trains to Torino, Venezia, Bologna, Firenze, Roma and Napoli and the Malpensa Express to Malpensa airport (also from Milano Cadorna). Milano Porta Garibaldi is the second main station.
  • Under Article 142(3)(f) of the Codice della Strada (D.Lgs. 285/1992), buses and coaches with a maximum laden mass over 8 tonnes may drive at up to 100 km/h on motorways (autostrade) and up to 80 km/h on other roads outside built-up areas. Lower signed limits always apply.
  • Under Article 172(6) of the Codice della Strada, every occupant over three years old of a minibus or coach (vehicle categories M2 and M3) must wear the seat belt fitted to their seat while seated; passengers must be informed of this by signs or pictograms at each seat (Article 172(7)).
  • EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest, recorded by the tachograph.
  • Most Italian motorways (autostrade) are tolled (pedaggio): the toll is paid at the toll stations or by electronic toll device, by vehicle class. Toll amounts are not given here.

The Last Supper and other timed visits

The Cenacolo sets firm rules for groups. Every visitor needs a booking, free admissions included, and people go in small timed groups for 15 minutes. Arrive 30 minutes before the slot. Tickets are released quarterly, and groups are not taken on free-admission Sundays. Build the coach times around that slot, not the other way round.

Lakes, Bergamo and Franciacorta

Allow about 1 h 5 min for Como, 1 h 10 min for the Città Alta in Bergamo and 1 h 30 min for Stresa. Bellagio is about 1 h 45 min. A big coach cannot use the lake road from Como, closed to vehicles over 10.5 m, and goes over the hills via the Valassina instead. Franciacorta is about 1 h 20 min, and Verona or Turin over two hours each way.

Questions organisers ask

Which airport is closest to the city?

Milan Linate Airport, about 7 km from Piazza del Duomo and around 20 minutes by coach. Malpensa is about 53 km (about 1 h 5 min) and Bergamo about 56 km (about 1 h 10 min), so check which one the flights use before planning the first day.

Is there a coach rule at Fiera Milano in Rho?

The fairground sits beside the A4 and A8 at Rho, outside the centre. No official coach set-down point is published, so the operator agrees where the group gets off when the trip is booked.

Can a coach take the group to San Siro?

The stadium is west of the centre, by Metro M5 San Siro Stadio. On match and concert days the roads are busy, so leave early and agree the pick-up spot before kick-off.
