Moving wedding guests by coach
At an Italian wedding the guests are often spread over several hotels, the ceremony is in a historic centre and the reception is at a villa outside town. A coach with a driver ties the three together; a car with driver takes the couple.
The church in the centre
Many historic centres are ZTLs, and a hired coach cannot simply pull up at the church door. In Lucca coaches stay outside the walls and set down at Piazzale Boccherini, Porta San Pietro, Porta Elisa or Porta Santa Maria. In Florence and Siena the coach uses fixed set-down points, and its permit decides which. Agree the ceremony stop with the operator and print the walking time in the invitation.
The couple's car follows different rules. A car with driver (NCC) is booked in advance and can pull in at the kerb to wait for the couple, though never on a taxi stand.

Villas on the lakes and the coast
On Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast, vehicle size decides the plan. Vehicles longer than 10.5 m may not use the lakeside road to Bellagio, and the western shore has narrow roads with few places to stop, so a smaller vehicle or the lake boats often work better. Villa Erba at Cernobbio is about 15 minutes from Como.
On the Amalfi Coast, no bus longer than 10.36 m or taller than 4 m may use the SS163, so guests travel by midi-coach or minibus within those limits. Ravello's centre takes only coaches authorised online by the day before, and a 2026 provincial ordinance limited bus length on the road up; the operator checks whether it still applies.
Rules the organiser should know
- A car with driver is an NCC service under Legge 21/1992: it is booked in advance at the operator's garage or office, including through apps
- Many historic centres are limited-traffic zones (ZTL), where vehicles need a permit or registration to enter, so the stopping point for a church or town-hall ceremony is agreed with the operator
The return after midnight
The evening return is where wedding transport goes wrong. A driver who brought guests to an afternoon ceremony may run out of hours before the last dance, since daily rest is at least 11 hours. Give the operator the first pick-up and the last departure, and ask for a second driver or a second vehicle if the gap is long. The driver drinks nothing: the limit is zero.
Questions organisers ask
How many guests fit in a car with driver?
A saloon takes up to three, a larger van-style NCC car up to eight. Bigger parties go by minibus, which counts as a bus.
Can the coach wait at the villa during the reception?
If the villa has room for it, yes. Ask the venue about access and turning space on its drive before booking a full-size coach.
Can one coach serve several hotels?
Yes, in loops. Give each hotel's headcount and the ceremony time, and the operator works out whether two or three loops fit before the ceremony or a second vehicle is needed.
