Minibus Rental Across Italy

Accessible group transport in Italy

On a private hire, accessibility is not automatic. The EU assistance rights for disabled passengers cover scheduled routes of 250 km or more, not a hired vehicle, so everything is settled with the booking: the vehicle, the lift or ramp, the securing points and the stops.

What to tell the operator

Give the number of wheelchair users, whether each one transfers to a seat or travels in the wheelchair, and the size and weight of any powered chair. Each wheelchair position replaces seats and takes luggage space, so a mixed group may need a minibus plus a car, or a second vehicle for the bags. Everyone seated who is over three wears whatever belt or restraint the vehicle provides.

Old towns on foot

Many Italian centres are steep, paved and closed to coaches, so the stop matters as much as the vehicle. In Assisi, coaches stay at the parks around the walls: set the group down at the Basilica di San Francesco end and collect it at the Santa Chiara end, so nobody climbs the hill twice. The Sassi of Matera are reached only on foot, with steep steps; check the route with the guide before the day.

Siena has escalators from the coach areas into the centre, at Fontebranda and at Pescaia. In Venice, Piazzale Roma is the only point reached by road, and the People Mover links it with the Marittima cruise terminal.

Rules the organiser should know

  • EU bus and coach passenger rights give disabled passengers assistance on scheduled services of 250 km or more, if they tell the operator at least 36 hours before the trip
  • At the Arena di Verona, barrier-free access to the stalls is through gates 1, 4 and 8, by a metal ramp from Piazza Bra

Venues and access points

At the Arena di Verona, step-free access to the stalls is through gates 1, 4 and 8, by a ramp from Piazza Bra. Ravello admits authorised coaches into its centre for passengers with disabilities, on an online request made by the day before. For each museum or church, ask the site about step-free entry when you book the group's visit, and give the operator the answer so the set-down point matches.

Questions organisers ask

Does the EU 36-hour notice rule apply to a hired minibus?

No. That rule belongs to scheduled services of 250 km or more. On a private hire, give the details when you ask for a quote.

Can a passenger stay in the wheelchair during the journey?

Where the vehicle has a securing point for that position, yes. Tell the operator, so the right layout is sent.

Can a large group with one wheelchair user travel together?

Ask on the request, with the number of wheelchair users. The operator says which accessible vehicle it can supply; a group can also pair an accessible minibus with a standard coach on the same timetable.
