Coach Hire from the Naples Cruise Terminal

The Naples cruise terminal, the Stazione Marittima on the Molo Angioino, sits in the middle of the city beside Castel Nuovo and Piazza Municipio. The walk ashore is short. The coach plan is tight, because the city's coach rules apply from the first street.

The coach ticket and the parking list

Tourist coaches face four ZTLs in Naples: Posillipo, San Martino, Centro Storico and Toledo - Decumani - Carmine. The limits apply every day, at all hours. If the vehicle has over eight passenger seats, it needs a ticket: buy it online before the day and display it behind the windscreen.

Parking, too, is limited to areas on the city's list. Two of them sit close to the ship: long stays beside the port on Via Nuova Marina, short stays on Via Depretis, by the Molo Angioino. No coach stop at the terminal is named by the city, so the pickup point is the operator's to confirm.

Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius

Pompeii is about 27 km from central Naples, roughly 35 min by coach in light traffic. Herculaneum is about 12 km, around 20 min. The road towards the Vesuvius crater path is about 21 km, some 40 min. Two of the three fit a port day if the ship stays long enough. Reserve group entry at each site before the ship arrives.

From ship to coach: what to plan

  • The cruise terminal is in the historic centre of Naples, next to Castel Nuovo and overlooking Piazza Municipio.
  • Pompeii (Scavi di Pompei) is about 27 km by road from central Naples (about 35 min by coach in light traffic); Herculaneum (Ercolano) is about 12 km (about 20 min).
  • Sorrento is about 50 km by road (about 1 h 10 min by coach in light traffic); ferries and hydrofoils to Capri and the Sorrento peninsula leave from Calata Beverello, next to the cruise terminal.
  • Naples has four limited-traffic zones for tourist coaches (ZTL Bus: Centro Storico, Posillipo, San Martino and Toledo - Decumani - Carmine), active every day 00:00-24:00; a coach with more than eight passenger seats must buy an access ticket online in advance and display it.
  • Coaches may not park anywhere in Naples except in the designated coach areas; the city's list includes long-stay places on Via Nuova Marina, along the port, and short-stay places on Via Depretis, near the Molo Angioino.
  • The city's coach rules are set by Deliberazione di Giunta n. 111 of 25 March 2025 and the related ordinance n. 610.

Airports for this port

Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is about 50 km by road, roughly 1 h 10 min. Beyond it, the Amalfi Coast road (SS163) is closed to vehicles over 10.36 m long or 4 m high, so a full-size coach never runs it. A midi-coach or minibus does the coast. The 2027 calendar for plate rotation (targhe alterne) is not out yet; check the rules for your date.

For Capri, the fast ferries and hydrofoils leave from Calata Beverello, right next to the cruise terminal. The group simply walks there.

Questions organisers ask

How far is Naples airport from the terminal?

About 8 km to Piazza del Municipio, beside the terminal: around 20 min by coach in light traffic, longer at peak times.

Can a full-size coach take us to Positano?

No. The coast road bans vehicles of that size. Book a midi-coach or minibus for the Amalfi Coast, or take the group to Sorrento by fast ferry from Calata Beverello.

Is any vehicle exempt from the coach ticket?

A few are, some only after an annual application: Euro 6 coaches on trips for schools based in the Città Metropolitana di Napoli, Euro 4 or newer vehicles no longer than 7.36 m, and cars with a Naples NCC licence. The operator knows which case fits the vehicle booked.
