Coaches for Civitavecchia Cruise Groups

Civitavecchia is the port for Rome, but it is not Rome. Piazza Venezia is about 71 km away by road; a coach needs roughly 80 minutes when traffic is light, so a shore excursion is a long coach day.

Getting a coach to the ship

Private cars cannot reach the cruise quays. Anyone arriving by car or taxi gets out at the port gates and rides the free port shuttle to the berth. Coaches, chauffeur cars and private shuttles get closer only once the terminal operator has issued them an access permit.

The vehicle's operator applies for that permit, not the group, so send the ship, the date and the passenger count with the quote request. No official stop for excursion coaches has been published; the boarding point is confirmed by the operator.

Largo della Pace and the terminals

Largo della Pace, just inside the port entrance by the old town, gathers the passenger services but is not itself a terminal; the shuttles start there. The Amerigo Vespucci terminal, opened in 2018, has check-in on the first floor and boarding bridges. The Donato Bramante terminal, inaugurated in November 2025, is the newest.

The terminals have no luggage storage. A group that leaves the ship in the morning and flies in the evening keeps its cases on the coach all day, or goes straight to the airport.

From ship to coach: what to plan

  • Civitavecchia is Rome's cruise port: Piazza Venezia in central Rome is about 71 km by road (to Largo della Pace) (about 1 h 20 min by coach in light traffic), so a Rome shore excursion is a long day.
  • Private cars are not allowed on the cruise quays: passengers arriving by car or taxi are set down at the port access gates and continue by the port shuttle.
  • Vehicles that need to enter the terminal areas (for example cars with driver, coaches and private shuttles) need an access permit issued by the terminal operator's permit office; the operator of the vehicle arranges it.
  • Free port shuttles carry passengers between every berth and Largo della Pace.
  • Civitavecchia railway station is about 500 m from the port entrance; on average two trains an hour run between Rome and Civitavecchia, stopping at the main Rome stations (Termini, Ostiense, Tiburtina, Trastevere and San Pietro among them).
  • Regional buses stop near the port: the nearest stop, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, is about 100 m from the south port entrance.
  • The terminals have no luggage storage, according to the terminal operator.

A Rome day from the ship

Count on more than two and a half hours of driving for the round trip, more at peak times. Set the return by the ship's all-aboard time, then work back. Rome sells coach permits online only since 1 January 2026, and coaches below Euro 5 may not enter its bus zones.

Inside Rome, coach areas close for works and events, and the Colosseum and Vatican areas run daily quotas, so book group entry to the sites in advance. On a day this long the driver also needs a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours at the wheel.

Questions organisers ask

How far is Fiumicino from the port?

About 66 km, roughly 1 h by coach in light traffic, measured to Largo della Pace.

Can the group take the train to Rome instead?

Yes. The railway station is some 500 m from the port gate, and on average two trains an hour run to Rome, calling at San Pietro, Trastevere, Ostiense, Termini and Tiburtina among others. With luggage or a fixed meeting time, a coach is easier to manage.

Do regional buses serve the port?

They stop in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, a hundred metres or so from the southern gate. That suits individual travellers better than a group with suitcases.
