Coach Hire at Genoa's Cruise Terminals
Genoa has two cruise terminals side by side, Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria, a few minutes' walk from Piazza Principe station. The city charges no coach access ticket, which makes the coach side simpler here than in most Italian ports.
Ponte dei Mille or Ponte Andrea Doria
Ponte dei Mille, the older of the two, is the historic Stazione Marittima, on three floors joined by escalators and lifts. Ponte Andrea Doria has two levels and two 300 m berths. Each can take two large ships at once, so on a busy day several ships' passengers share the same port road. Ferries sail from different terminals, at Calata Chiappella, Ponte Colombo or Ponte Caracciolo; make sure nobody sends the coach there.
By road, coaches leave the motorway at Genova Ovest and follow the cruise and ferry terminal signs, then 'Porto passeggeri', to the security gate. No official coach stop at the terminals is published. The operator confirms the stopping point.

Stopping and parking in the city
Stopping to load or unload, for 30 minutes at most, is permitted in most of the city. The city names Piazza De Ferrari, Piazza Villa, Piazza Dante and Piazza Caricamento, opposite the Aquarium. For longer waits, the listed coach parks are Via di Francia, a paid park near the Fiumara shopping centre and an open-air park at Marina Aeroporto. The last two need booking. The old town is pedestrian only, so the tour inside it is on foot.
From ship to coach: what to plan
- Genoa's own airport (Cristoforo Colombo) is the nearest, about 11 km by road from Piazza De Ferrari (about 20 min by coach in light traffic); it is not one of the airports covered here.
- The cruise terminals are a few minutes on foot from Genova Piazza Principe railway station (the port authority gives about 400 m) and from the Porto Antico.
- Piazza De Ferrari in the centre of Genoa is about 4 km by road (about 10 min by coach in light traffic).
- By road, the nearest motorway exit is Genova Ovest; then follow the signs for the cruise and ferry terminals ('Terminal Crociere - Terminal Traghetti', then 'Porto passeggeri') to the security gate.
- Milan is about 140 km by road from the centre of Genoa (about 2 h 5 min by coach in light traffic).
- La Spezia, the gateway to the Cinque Terre, is about 102 km by road from the centre of Genoa (about 1 h 45 min by coach in light traffic).
Airports for this port
- Milan Linate Airport (LIN) — about 150 km, about 2 h 10 min by coach in light traffic (from Piazza De Ferrari, about 4 km from the terminals)
- Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) — about 186 km, about 2 h 45 min by coach in light traffic (from Piazza De Ferrari)
- Pisa International Airport (PSA) — about 164 km, about 2 h 25 min by coach in light traffic (from Piazza De Ferrari)
Airports and the Riviera
Genoa's own airport, Cristoforo Colombo, is about 11 km from Piazza De Ferrari. Groups flying through Milan Linate face about 150 km, roughly 2 h 10 min by coach. Malpensa is about 186 km (2 h 45 min) and Pisa about 164 km (2 h 25 min).
Portofino is about 36 km away, but its road is narrow and parking is very limited; many groups go by boat from Genoa, Camogli, Rapallo or Santa Margherita Ligure. For the Cinque Terre, the coach goes to La Spezia, about 1 h 45 min, and the group carries on by train or boat.
Questions organisers ask
Is Milan a realistic day trip from the ship?
Milan is about 140 km, around 2 h 5 min each way by coach in light traffic. Over four hours on the road, plus the driver's breaks, leaves a short visit.
Do coaches pay to enter Genoa?
No. Genoa charges no coach access ticket. Parking is a separate matter: two of the listed coach parks must be booked.
Can the group walk to the railway station?
Yes. The port authority gives about 400 m from the terminals to Genova Piazza Principe, a few minutes on foot.
